These recent Fortune articles reinforce the ascendency of Python, the scripting language used by Orchid Extender.

A quick search of our website will reveal how many articles we’ve published over the years on the rise of Python, the scripting language used with Orchid Extender. If we’ve been quiet lately it might be because the language battle has become something of a no-contest, with Python first and Daylight second, if you use the latest TIOBE Index as a guide.

We’re revisiting the topic now as a couple of recent Fortune.com articles caught our attention, and we think they are worth sharing:

Best Languages to Learn

This Fortune article was targeted at those just starting out on their coding journey, perhaps motivated by the prospect of “a lucrative career in software development.” But, where to start if, as they put it:

…there are between 350 and 430 languages spoken in the United States alone. Similarly, there are hundreds of programming languages out there to choose from.

Python, as expected, was high on the list (and the most popular language on GitHub). The reasons given included:

  • Its robust ecosystem of libraries (open-source code modules) saves developers time and effort.
  • It is general enough to fill a variety of programming needs.
  • It is considered “the default choice” in the exploding field of AI.

Languages Most in Demand

So, you’ve put in the hours to become proficient at your chosen language and are ready to go in search of that lucrative career. But are your skills still a good fit for today’s market, or have they fallen out of favour?

Fortunately (if unsurprisingly), our next Fortune article finds a close correlation between the best languages to learn, and those most in demand. That’s certainly the case when it comes to Python.

They quote Thai Le from the University of Mississippi as saying:

Python is the programming language with the biggest demand. It is quite intuitive, and I think it’s easier to learn. And if you use Python, you can do a lot of things...

Extend Sage 300 using your Python skills

When it comes to Sage 300, browsing Orchid’s Extender Marketplace will give you just a taste of what that “lot of things” might be. The one thing all these Apps have in common is that they are written in Python.

Thanks to the power of Python, Extender Developer lets you take the customization of Sage 300 to the next level.

A working knowledge of Python may well put you on the path to being “Most in Demand” within your organization!
